Sisal carpet is carpet made of sisal, which is a very stiff fiber that is thought to have originally grown in the Yucatan area of Mexico. The material is extremely durable, and therefore sisal carpets are capable of resisting stains or wear and tear easily. It’s also highly resistant to static electricity. Due to its rarity in the world these carpets tend to be very expensive, and because of the traditional latex backing used they can cause allergic reactions, which is something to keep in mind before purchasing.
Sisal was thought to have originated in the Yucutan area of Mexico, but this is unproven. It is known that around the 19th century it was transported to Florida, the Caribbean, and a few places in Africa and Asia to make it easier to cultivate and produce. However, it wasn’t widely commercially cultivated until the early 20th century.
The big benefit of sisal carpeting is that it is incredibly durable, able to withstand stains and wear and tear with ease. The fibers on the trees are sharp enough to cut, so it’s not surprising that the carpeting is so sturdy, though after processing it loses that sharpness. The carpet is also highly resistant to static electricity, making it a good choice for someone who is concerned with that.
The biggest problem with sisal carpeting, however, is that it’s extremely expensive. A modern work-around is to get a sisal rug instead of the full carpet, as you’ll still get most of the value from it that way. Sisal carpet tiles usually come with pads to set underneath them because the sisal can be slippery on a bare wood floor.
Another concern with traditional sisal carpet is that, because of its strength, it needs a latex base to keep it from naturally curling after a short period of time. This is clearly a problem for someone with an allergy – they may not even be able to step into the house, so if you suspect you have an allergy, ask about alternatives when purchasing sisal.
There are synthetic sisal carpet tiles available online that avoid the problems of natural sisal, though some have voiced a complaint that making it synthetic ruins the whole point of sisal in the first place. These synthetic materials could be used to make any kind of carpet, so why sisal? Nonetheless, a market remains for the product.
Sisal is relatively unknown due to its high price and limited availability, but its unique feel and durability mean that there likely will always be a market for it.
