Sterilite Review

by Philip

I’m the kind of person who grew up using butter bowls to keep my leftovers, so the thought of purchasing Sterilite containers – which to be honest, are not the absolute cheapest containers available – seemed silly at first. But I decided to try them after seeing them being promoted at a store. How did they stack up?

Sterilite doesn’t just make food storage. They make much larger storage boxes, as well as larger items like cabinets. Sterilite has been around for decades though, and so I figured it was probably good at making what they make. But I wanted to see how good exactly. So I purchased several of their Flavor Saver Sterilite containers. They looked pretty standard actually – clear container, bright blue top, it seals very easily and holds tightly together. It was clearly a high quality product.

But how was the food? I made spaghetti that evening and kept it in the refrigerator, mostly because I wanted to see how the hamburger in it would taste afterwards. In my mind, hamburger that has been cooked and left in the fridge for a couple days tastes bland and stale, and if this container could help prevent that, I’d be won over.

The result? While the meat wasn’t as good as it was fresh, I thought there was a noticeable improvement. There was a bit more taste than there usually is, and it was still very moist overall – the Sterilite plastic did something to keep the good stuff in and the bad stuff out. So a definite thumbs up there.

I also got one of their dried food containers for storing cereal, and have used that for a few weeks. For cereal, there’s definitely an improvement in the quality after some time. I usually just leave the cereal in a box and wrap the bag as tight as I can, but now I can tell that even with clips holding the bag closed, it doesn’t store as well as Sterilite storage containers do. Now, does Sterilite do better than a general container would? That I can’t answer, but with the improvement I’m seeing so far, I don’t particularly care to try other containers. I’m quite happy with this one.

So based on my own limited testing, I’d say I’m pretty happy with the Sterilite brand. Are there other companies out there that would work as well? Maybe. But with the spaghetti I noticed an improvement in quality, enough that I’ll keep an eye out for Sterilite plastic containers when I’m looking to purchase something to store leftovers and dry goods.
