Decorating Your Home with Seagrass Carpet

by Philip

A part of home decorating that I think is often not thought through well is what to put on the floor. Sure, you can get the entire home carpeted all at once, but I’ve always preferred hardwood floors, and then choosing different rugs and carpets throughout the house to design with. One of my new favorite materials to use is seagrass carpet. With it’s beautiful woven patterns, ability to hide dirt easily, and toughness, it’s proving to work great in all rooms of my home.

seagrass carpetSeagrass is grown in China, in the flooded areas of the country, since it’s an underwater plant. This grass is unique in that it’s tough enough to be spun in yarn, which is then woven into a carpet for the floor. This toughness is both a good and a bad aspect – it helps keep the carpet strong, and makes it last for a long time, but it also makes it hard to dye, and so seagrass carpet you see will likely be a neutral color, something brownish. Not to say it doesn’t look good however.

These colors do an excellent job of hiding dirt, and so the carpet is great for your home if you go in and out a lot, or if you have children that like to make messes – and I don’t know of any child that doesn’t like it. And since the carpet is so tough, it will survive a lot of intense cleanings.

If you wanted to try it out, but weren’t sold on it just yet, seagrass tiles are an easy way to sample it. These tiles are meant to be sewn together, and so you can get as many as you want to put in your home. You can cover an entire room, or just try a small rug of it near the front door.

Despite how exotic it sounds, seagrass is not terribly expensive. A very nice rug can be had for under $100, and will give you a good idea of what you think of the material. If you end up liking it, you could get more, or you could even get a seagrass chair or bench. Maybe you’ll even end up with wall to wall seagrass carpet in your entire house!

Seagrass carpet is an inexpensive, yet practical and lovely addition to a modern home. It’s strong, and can hide dirt extremely well, making it an excellent choice for parents of smaller children, or a room that sees a lot of traffic.
