Making the Most of Plastic Storage Containers

During my recent move I was unpacking boxes and I came across one that was filled to the brim with various plastic storage containers we had collected in our old place and then decided to keep in the new place. Apparently we were interested in collecting them in the new house too.

On top of the whole mess were these large plastic storage containers made of collapsible polyethylene, so it’s plastic but acts like canvas. We used these at the old place to keep our biking equipment in one place, at least until I brought home some lockable storage lockers, but now I think they’re going to be good as garbage bags for the garage, or maybe to keep some of my wife’s dirty gardening tools in. Looking at them, I wasn’t surprised that we kept them – we hate throwing much of anything away, especially since we’re moving into a larger space, and now I’m glad we didn’t. Filling up our garage has been a challenge – it’s still pretty empty, which feels odd to me. So the more out there the better.

A few years back I helped out with a disaster relief project when my hometown’s river flooded a neighborhood near my grandparents house. During my time helping I handed out some plastic food storage containers for them to salvage what food they could and keep it from getting wet and moldy. Those were in there too. There were some 1 gallon containers, I guess you’re supposed to put flour or seeds or something in them, and we had some larger 5 gallon containers too. I don’t really buy food in bulk so we haven’t used them for their intended use, but it seems like something else I can use in the garage now. No exact solution just yet, but I figure if I put a plastic storage container or two in the garage something will come up.

At the bottom of the box were some small stackable plastic storage containers that looked something like petri dishes, but were actually designed to hold individual beads for making bracelets, necklaces, and so on. These I’m at a total loss on. My wife doesn’t make anything that would require beads, and I can’t figure out anything they’d be good for holding besides beads. As hesitant as I am to throw things out, I have enough spare storage boxes already.

So our odd move continues, and yes, it turns out we’re the kind of couple that packs a box with plastic storage containers. I still maintain my sanity, despite evidence to the contrary.
