3 Reasons I Hate Jewelry Boxes

by Philip

Okay, so maybe I don’t exactly hate jewelry boxes, but I recently decided that I was going to buy my wife a new jewelry box, as her old one broke during our move. It seemed like a simple thing to do – she needed a new one, I’ll get one similar to the old one, no problem. But in the process I discovered a few reasons why I hate jewelry boxes and the process of shopping for them.

I quickly found my first major reason for hating shopping for these things when we arrived at the store – the sheer variety of them is incredible. I thought I could buy one of those simple wooden jewelry boxes (or maybe even a couple large storage boxes) and be done with it. But once I told my wife we were going shopping, her mind turned to a number of alternative styles, sizes, and colors. The wooden one was fine, but how about a white jewelry box with rounded edges? Or a red one that looks like an antique dresser? She spent much longer than I had expected in debating these things – a debate that I refused to have, as I didn’t really care one way or the other what she got.

She ended up hovering over one of their leather jewelry boxes instead – and it looks nice, I admit. But then I quickly found major problem number two – the price on the one she had chosen was high. Much higher than the others we had been looking at. When I asked her why this particular one was valued at almost three times the cost of the ones we had started at, she said something about how it felt elegant. Well, I suppose that’s worth the extra cash, right?

I was still doubtful at this point, and was starting to feel a little dizzy from all the jewelry boxes for women I was surrounded by. After offering to help pay for the jewelry box, I relented and said I’d split the cost with her. Sure, all our income goes into one pot, but I figured that she’d appreciate it more if she saw her paycheck go towards it. By this standard I was already appreciating it quite a bit. As we checked out, she pointed out that it was bigger than her old jewelry box was. I agreed that it was. Then she hit me with my third and biggest pet peeve when it comes to womens jewelry boxes.

She said she needed more jewelry to fill it up.

I love my wife, and I’m happy when I see her happy. But when it comes to jewelry boxes, I’ve had enough. I never want to shop for them again. I’m much happier dealing with the topic of video game storage.
