My garage feels like a luxury to me – so why not treat it like one? When it comes to garage storage for tools, shovels, and my fridge (not to mention the actual car) I decided not to skimp on making sure everything was secure and pleasant to look at and be around.
My wife enjoys gardening, and has a lot of diggers, planters, and shovelers to keep in the garage. I decided to go with simple wire shelving for this task. The shelving is easy to clean when necessary (although she is tidy enough to get a lot of the dirt off of everything before putting it back) and fits into the garage very nicely. It’s also very strong, capable of holding up to 400 pounds, according to the guy at Home Depot, so we shouldn’t have any fear of hitting the weight limit. It has a warranty too, which makes us feel a little better too. My dad was a little obsessed with warranties when I was a kid, but I’m starting to see the point he had.
I opted to keep my biking equipment and basic tools in a gray metal cabinet. It is easily lockable, so even though we don’t expect problems in our neighborhood, when we’re gone for long periods of time it brings me peace of mind to know my valuable hobby equipment is well protected. There’s plenty of space to hold everything I need, it was simple to get into the garage, and it’s all kept together in a convenient place, near our door. It may be a bit cliche to throw around terms like garage storage systems, but that’s just what we feel like we have in place for our hobbies!
Speaking of garage storage solutions, I don’t really do a ton of work in my garage, and so I can keep quite a few things out here that some other people may be hesitant to keep in the garage. We don’t drink much pop, but when buying a 12 pack we like to set it right on the wire shelving, where it’s out of the way, but easy to grab if we run out in the fridge. We try to stock up when shopping because neither of us likes to do it, so we may use space differently than other people do! For a while we used a corner of the garage for the various storage boxes that had been left over from our move that we were using for cd storage, but we didn’t like them in the garage, so they’ve been moved.
So whether it’s garage storage cabinets or shelving, food or games, I try to maximize every part of my home. I don’t do much in the garage besides park, which allows us to treat it as something like a larger pantry, and if you’re in the same boat, be sure to consider the space that you have too.
